Abstract
564,209. Measuring surface roughness. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and TUPLIN, W. A. March 3, 1943, No. 3476. [Class 106 (ii)] An instrument for measuring surface roughness of the type in which a tracing member operates multiplying mechanism, comprises means to respond to movements of the tracer head a relative to the traversing head c instead of, as usual, to movements of the tracer needle f relative to the tracer head a. The tracer lever g is pivoted at h on the tracer head, and is almost balanced by a spring i, so that slight movements of the lever actuate the usual multiplying mechanism j. Surrounding the needle f is a skid d supporting the tracer head. For measuring coarse irregularities in the surface, a screw m is screwed down to lift the needle f. Movements of the skid d are then transmitted through parts a, b, c, c', m to lever g and multiplying device at a ratio dependent on the distance A.
