Abstract
Ethylenechlorhydrin is obtained by reacting ethylene with aqueous hypochlorous acid, the resulting hydrochloric acid is neutralized or sodium chloride is added, and the ethylenechlorhydrin then extracted with an organic solvent, containing a carbonyl group, which is substantially insoluble in aqueous salt solutions. The following solvents are mentioned: (a) saturated aliphatic ketones, e.g. methylethylketone, diethylketone and dipropylketone; (b) unsaturated aliphatic ketones, e.g. mesityloxide, 3 : 4-dimethylhexene - 3 - one - 2; (c) carboxylic esters, e.g. butylformate, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, benzyl and cyclohexyl acetate; (d) alicyclicketones, e.g. cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and 4-methylcyclohexanone; and (e) aldehydes, e.g. butyraldehyde and furfural. Detailed examples are given and also a table showing the distribution of the ethylenechlorhydrin as between the solvent and aqueous salt solution.
