Abstract

563,864. Controlling air supply to furnace grates. HOLLAND, L. G., and NEEDHAM, A. Feb. 5, 1943, No. 1949. [Class 51 (i)] In a boiler furnace provided with a coking stoker, the air supply to the furnace grate from the ashpit is controlled and distributed by one or more transverse baffles dividing the ashpit into two or more compartments in communication with one another through non-adjustable openings provided in the baffles. As shown, transverse baffles 23, 24 pivotally mounted on rods 32 mounted on side bars 30 divide the ashpit into compartments 20, 21, 22. Air supplied by a fan to a, box 14 enters the front compartment 20. Part of the air passes through openings 25 in the baffles and enters the compartments 21, 22 at a reduced pressure so that air is supplied to the grate at varying pressures in accordance with the thickness of the fuel bed. The baffles and a hinged plate 2 at the rear of the ashpit may be tilted by chains when it is desired to remove ashes from the ashpit.
