Abstract
563,478. Tipping apparatus. MITCHELL, E. B. N. June 29, 1942, No. 8949. [Classes 78 (iv) and 104 (ii)] Discharging apparatus for railway wagons comprises a tippler 11 in a fixed position, one or more wagon rail tracks 53, 153 parallel to the tipping axis of the tippler, a transfer carriage 26 adapted to receive a wagon 27 on rails 51, 52 and running on transfer rails 45 transverse to the wagonrail tracks, and means for moving the transfer carriage on its rails so that wagons may be transferred sidewise from the wagon-rail track 53 or 153 to the tippler, tipped therein and returned to either of the tracks 53, 153. The transfer carriage 26 is hauled to-and-fro on the rails 45 by means of a motor 55 and cables 58, 62 passing round end pulleys 59 and connected at 60, 61 to a block 63 having horns 64, 65 between which a pin 68 on the transfer carriage normally depends to form a driving connection between the cables and the carriage. When the carriage has been hauled out to its full extent it rests on rails 25 on a support frame 23 carried by the tippler. As the tippler is raised it lifts the carriage and the support frame, and the pin 68 rises and leaves the block 63 behind ; when the wagon has been tipped the carriage descends with the tippler and the pin 68 enters between the horns 64, 65 again. The carriage may be driven by chain, rack, or other gear instead of by cables. The tippler may be operated substantially as described in Specification 544,561 and comprises a cradle 11 having a buffer bar 12 pivoted at 20 to side members 13 which carry another crossbar 15 and are pivoted at 16 to a fixed structure. The cradle 11 is connected by a link 22 to the support frame 23 which normally rests on fixed blocks 38, 39. When the cradle is rotated by means of a winch 35 and a cable 33 secured to the cradle at 34, the link 22 raises the support 23 clear of the blocks 38, 39 and the wagon tilts sidewise against buffers 70 on the bar 12 ; further rotation of the winch causes the side members 13 to swing about the pivots 16 so that the cross-bar 15 clamps down on top of the wagon.
