Abstract
563,216. Uniting by fusion. PEILLON, P., SARRUF, N., and CASTRO, L. Dec. 31, 1942, No. 18626. [Class 83 (iv)] Metallic-arc welding is effected by striking the arc and completing the weld beneath the surface of a body of non-conducting liquid. The liquid may be a hydrocarbon such as a mineral oil. The electrode may be flux-coated and the coating may be impregnated or coated with a protective varnish or other compound such as polyvinyl chloride to render it impervious to the liquid in which the weld is effected. Repairs may thus be effected in the interior of vessels or pipes for conveying or storing oil without emptying such vessels or pipes and in some cases even without interfering with the continued use of the apparatus. In one process, two mild steel plates may be laid edge to edge in a tank containing mineral lubricating oil and welded by a flux-coated mild steel electrode, such as is used in air, but further coated with polyvinyl chloride. The electrode may be arranged at an angle of 30 degrees to the plane of the plates with the flux resting on the plate. As the electrode burns away it may be fed down parallel to itself, the angle of the electrode remaining constant. In another process a cracked iron casting, after chipping to form a groove, is immersed in a tank containing oil and welded with a mild steel electrode as in the previous form. According to the Provisional Specification, inert or reducing gases may be fed to the welding point. Specifications 8642/07, [Class 83], 395,663 and 559,033 are referred to.
