Abstract
770,351. Welding by fusion. BARI INSTITUT, ANSTALT. Dec. 21, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953; April 5, 1954], No. 36971/54. Class 83 (4). A welding arc is shielded by an inner layer of rare gas and an outer layer of carbon dioxide. The rare gas is helium, argon or a mixture thereof. Solids or liquids such as borax, sodium chloride or other fluxes may be added to the carbon dioxide in suspension, as a mist or as an aerosol. Light metals such as magnesium, aluminium or their alloys and steels such as chromenickel steels having 15-30 per cent chromium may be welded. In carrying out the process, apparatus in which a consumable or non- consumable solid or hollow electrode 1 surrounded by concentric nozzles 2, 5 is used. The nozzle 5 for the outer layer of gas preferably projects beyond the nozzle 2 for the inner layers.
