Abstract

561,286. Lock nuts. DUNDAS, Ltd., R. K., KING, R. D., and WOOD, N. F. Dec. 15, 1942, Nos. 17829/42 and 6609/43. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Lock nuts are formed by cutting slots 2, Fig. 1, across the tapped bore from opposite sides and then closing the slots at one side by pressure in the axial direction. Only one slot or more than two may be employed. When one slot is used the deformation may take place laterally by pressure in the direction of the screw, Fig. 10. Both types of deformation may be employed together. The end of the nut is preferably turned to circular form with a slight taper 1a and one slot is preferably at the base of the circular portion and the other half way along its length. The nut may be of non- metallic material. A machine for slotting the nuts employs a conveyor 3, Fig. 5, to which are attached holders 4 having hexagonal sockets to receive the nuts which are carried past slitting cutters 5 and under a roll 6 that deforms the slitted nut.
