Abstract
Alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium salts of alanine are prepared by treating the corresponding salts of acrylic acid with ammonium hydroxide. The alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of acrylic acid may be prepared in situ from the bases and acrylic acid or esters thereof. Free alanine may be prepared from the salts thereof by treatment first with acid and then with silver or lead oxide. In examples: (1) sodium acrylate, prepared from ethylacrylate and sodium hydroxide is heated with a solution containing ammonium carbonate and hydroxide; the resulting salt is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, evaporated and taken up with acetic acid and acetone to give b -alanine hydrochloride; (2) ammonium acrylate, prepared from the ethyl esters is similarly converted into b -alanine hydrochloride; (3) ethylacrylate is heated with aqueous ammonia and calcium hydroxide to give calcium b -alanate.
