Abstract

560,636. Fluxes. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd., FOX, F. A., and BUSHROD, C.J. Aug. 7, 1942, Nos. 11090/42 and 1238/43. [Class 82 (ii)] Relates to fluxes for welding magnesium and magnesium base alloys and also aluminium and aluminium base alloys, especially such of the latter as contain magnesium. The flux contains at least 7 per cent by weight of calcium, at least 11 per cent of sodium (if any} and calcium together, some proportion of each of potassium, fluorine, and chlorine, and at least three metal halides, but not more than 0.7 per cent of lithium. The flux does not contain zinc chloride together with an alkali aluminium fluoride, but may contain other additional salts, notably barium and sodium fluorides, and magnesium and barium chlorides. Any such additional metal, however, does not exceed 9 per cent by weight of the flux. Various examples of fluxes falling within the invention are given, among them being the following:- (I) Calcium chloride 30-40 per cent, potassium fluoride 5-15 per cent, potassium chloride 50-60 per cent ; (II) calcium chloride 20-35 per cent, sodium chloride 15-30 per cent, magnesium chloride 0-10 per cent, potassium chloride 35-55 per cent, potassium, calcium, and/or magnesium fluoride 3-15 per cent ; (III) calcium chloride 40-55 per cent, potassium chloride 15-30 per cent, sodium chloride 20-35 per cent, potassium fluoride 3-15 per cent. Specifications 313,487, 339,923, [both in Class 82 (ii)], 363,158 and 539,545 are referred to.
