[Class 31 (i)] An apparatus for detaching the edges of a sheet of paper and like material, e.g. a wage sheet 8, comprises a base 6 for a bed 7 provided with a serrated or like edge 9 along which a strip of the desired width is torn by means of a flexible metal band 15 secured at each end to a recess in the base and arranged to pass over a roller 13 and under a roller 14 attached to a frame fitted with a handle 12 by means of which the frame is moved from left to right across the base to cut an edge, from a sheet 8 which is projected the required amount under the band 15. The roller 13 extends to a position above the edge 9 and as the roller moves to the right the edge of the strip 8 is torn successively by being drawn past the serrated edge 9. A guide 26, Fig. 6, may be attached to the frame of the rollers 13, 14 for guiding the cut edge into an envelope. In one modification three rollers may be employed for the band 15 and a strip may be severed from the sheet 8 in both directions of movement of the rollers. In a further modification Fig. 5, three sets of rollers 19, 20, 21 with flexible bands or strips 22, 23, 24, are used and the middle band 24 passes over and under the rollers 21, in the opposite direction to the bands 22. 23 the rollers being arranged at different levels and acting to cut three parallel strips at once. The edges of the bands 24, 23 serve as tearing edges. Instead of metal bands parallel strands of wire may be used, and printing-matter may be arranged on the underside of the bands, or a stencil may be cut therein, or the rollers 13, 14 may carry type for printing.
