Abstract
558,857. Hydraulic transmission of power. PRATT, J. H., and GIRLING, A. H. G. July 18, 1942, No. 10035. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a master cylinder unit for a hydraulic transmission mechanism in which air entry is prevented by maintaing pressure in the system, the piston 8 has passageways 8a through it and a packing washer 9, pressed against the piston by the spring 10, serves as a non-return valve for the passageways. The cylinder is connected to a liquid reservoir 13 through a ball valve 15 and passages 4b, 4c leading to the front and back of the piston when it is in the " out of action " position shown. A leakage channel 14a may also be provided. The piston is moved to the left for an operational stroke, during which liquid is drawn into the cylinder at the right of the piston from the reservoir and the passageways 8a are blocked by the valve 9. During the return stroke liquid flows through the passageways from right to left of the piston. Any surplus liquid is returned to the reservoir 13 by way of leakage passage 14a or by the bodily lifting of the valve 14, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
