556,942. Treating solids with liquids-; washing granular materials. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. April 23, 1942. No. 5459. Convention date, April 24, 1941. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] Apparatus for treating solids with liquids comprises a vessel divided into a series of compartments, solids and liquids being fed to opposite ends of the series and means being provided for passing solids from one compartment to the next in one direction and liquid from one compartment of the next in the opposite direction. The apparatus may be used in the treatment of cellulose acetate and the like materials and the material may be passed through a series of units in which it is treated with different liquid. in. successive units. In the apparatus shown the solids are fed through a pipe 7 and liquid through a pipe 9 to the ends of a rotary vessel 6 divided into compartments 14. Perforated baffles 18 and solid baffles B are so arranged in the compartments that on the rotation of the vessel 6 the solids are lifted by the baffles 18 and passed through central openings 17 in the partitions 13 into the next compartment in one direction, while liquid is lifted by the parts B und passed through openings 22 in the opposite direction. The baffles in successive compartments are preferably so positioned that the solid is discharged from each compartment shortly before fresh material enters it.
