Abstract
556,500. Washing machines. BAIRD, J. O. June 1, 1942, No. 7405. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In an apparatus for washing plates &c. which may be combined with, or converted into, an apparatus for washing clothes the plates are inserted into vertical chordal compartments 13b of a cage 13 and cups into diametrical compartments 13a, the cage being secured to the square upper end of a shaft 10 which is driven from an electric motor 3 preferably so as to be oscillated by reduction gearing 4 mounted on a bracket 5 rigid with the motor casing. A crank-pin 6 driven by the gearing 4 drives by a pitman 7 a crank-pin 8 of greater throw on the shaft 10. U-section vanes 15 may be secured to the partition members of the cage 13 to direct the cleansing liquid on to the cups. For washing clothes the cage 13 may be replaced by an agitator 12 of usual form, such as is shown in Fig. 7 in a combined apparatus having two tanks 17, 18 in one at which is secured a cage 13 for receiving plates &c. and the other of which is fitted the agitator 12 for washing clothes. The crank-pins for oscillating the two members are connected by a rod 21, and the agitator 12 may be driven faster than the cage 13. In a further modification in which an agitator 12 is oscillated in a single compartment, the cage 13 may be constructed so as to fit over the agitator and it is so fitted when plates &c. are being washed.
