Abstract

555,027. Tubes. BINGHAM, M. June 15, 1942, No. 8197. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] A shaft for golf clubs, polo-sticks, croquet mallets &c., comprises a hollow foundation B of chemically produced plastic substance and at least one layer C formed by a strip helically wound upon the foundation and embedded therein, the'strip being composed of material of great strength, for example, wood, metal, or plastic material. As shown, two flexible strips C, E, are incorporated, the shaft being made by moulding the plastic substance B upon a core A (afterwards removed), winding a strip C of compressed wood thereon whilst the plastic substance is still mouldable so that the strip becomes embedded therein, placing a layer of plastic substance upon the helix and similarly applying a second winding E of compressed wood. The helices may be wound in opposite directions. Additional plastic material and flexible strips may be superimposed. The pitch of each helix may be varied in order to vary the rigidity of the shaft. The rigidity may be increased at any part of the shaft by adding one or more sleeves internally or externally, or by incorporating in the plastic material a number of longitudinal strips of compressed wood. The hand grip may be formed of the plastic substance with asperities moulded thereon, and be permanently secured to the shaft.
