Abstract
554,733. Aerial bombs. KEMP, L. C. Jan. 27 1942, No. 1107. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A bomb contains a rocket propellant adapted to be fired by a time or impact fuze so that the bomb may be forced backwardly to take an indefinite path in or on water or in the air near the water until it strikes an objective when it is exploded. The bomb comprises a casing 1 with end air-chambers 4, 5 and a central explosive chamber 3 surrounding an inner tube 6 which contains propellant burning material 7 and a gaine 12 or pressure fluid. The tube opens into a flared portion 6a containing an impact or time fuze 9, 9a, so that on impact with the water, the propellant material is fired and the gases issuing from the aperture 6a causes the bomb to move backwardly either in or on the water, or in the air near the water amongst shipping. If solid impact occurs during backward movement, an impact fuze 16 is fired, but if solid impact does not take place, then the explosive is ultimately fired through the propellant material and the gasine. A fuze 17 with a harder setting like the propellant fuze 9, 9a may be provided, so that should the bomb make impact with a body on its descent from the crraying plane, it will explode. The fuze 9, 9a may comprise a striker mounted on a transverse wire and a percussion cap. In a modification, the propellant tube may be situated in the front air chamber and not pass through the explosion chamber as previously described. Stabilizing pins 2 are fixed to the rear of the bomb.
