Abstract
304,318. France, State of, (Assignees of Marie, F.). Jan. 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Projectiles.-A projectile for bombing practice from aircraft is adapted to eject a cloud of coloured powder, such as red ochre on impact with the ground. The projectile, Fig. 1, has a hollow central stem 1 containing a charge of red ochre 11, Fig. 3. between wads 12, and an explosive cartridge 9 with a primer 10 opposite a firing pin 7 and kept away therefrom by a spring 8. A bag of sand 2 is attached to the front end of the stem and one or more discs 5 may be inserted in the bag to serve as a weight and to give a cvlindrical shape to the bag. The tail end of the stem is fitted with fins 3 to cause the bomb to fall nose downwards. On impact, the cartridge strikes the firing pin and is exploded; the explosion expels the red ochre 12 out of the tail end of the stem, and this forms a coloured cloud visible from the aircraft. For heavy projectiles. the stem may be a solid rectangular shaft of wood with a cylindrical recess in the rear for the cartridge and red ochre.
