[Class 100 (iv)] In line-spacing mechanism for a stencil-card, a rocking pawl-shield for automatically varying the spacing is coupled to the ratchet-wheel by a clicking detent such as a spring- finger. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the stencil-card D is placed in a holder 13 which is guided by fingers 7 on the carriage 1 and engages gears on the platen 5. An inked ribbon for rendering visible the stencil-characters is arranged behind the stencil-card and passes from a spool 23 to a spool 24. A ratchet-wheel 26 on the platen co-operates with a pawl 28 operated by a lever 34, and normally rests on a rocking shield 46 which is coupled by a spring-finger 51 to the ratchet-wheel. The shield has lugs 48, 49 for engaging a stop 50. After a line has been typed on the top part of the stencil-card, the lever 34 is operated, the pawl slides off the shield and is arrested by a stop 41 after a three-space movement, and the shield is advanced until the lug 49 engages the stop 50. After each line has been typed on the stencil-sheet Db, the lever 34 is operated, and the shield causes the pawl to impart a one-space movement. If it is desired to have two spaces between any two lines on the stencil-sheet, the shield is moved backwards by means of a fingerpiece 57 until the lugs 48, 49 are equidistant from the stop 50. The pawl is formed with a pointer 58 for reading space-indicating marks 59 on the shield.
