Abstract
554,496. Hydraulic transmission of power; valves. COOPER, A. H., and FAUDELL, C. L. Jan. 3, 1940, Nos. 138 and 2591. [Classes 69 (ii) and 135] A hydraulic power transmission device is adapted to deliver a reversible thrust in response to actuating mechanism such as an electrical relay which is caused to operate a pair of slide valves 4 arranged in a casing to which is attached a fluid reservoir 17 from which the liquid is directed to one or other end of a pair of cylinders 9 fitted with pistons 6 connected to rods 16 which effect the desired control The device is especially applicable to the controls of an aircraft or an aerial torpedo, and provides a construction which eliminates the use of pipes. The casing comprises a block 3 which is bored to receive a gear pump and also is bored with channels which direct the fluid from the pumps to the valves and with channels 23, 24 which act to return the exhaust fluid to the reservoir. To prevent the valves from getting stuck owing to accumulation of grit they are formed circular in cross section and on one or both faces of the valve one or more inclined byepass slots or channels 30 are provided which permits seepage of the liquid and rotation of the valve with elimination of grit. The pumps may be driven by wind action. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with that described in Specification 554,405, [Group XL].
