Abstract
553,679. Saponaceous compositions. CLAYTON, E., and EDWARDS, W. A. Nov. 28. 1941, No. 15373. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] A cleansing agent, especially for use in the treatment of textile and other fibrous materials, is obtained by causing one equivalent of one or more higher fatty acids, which may be saturated or may contain one double bond, to react in an aqueous medium with from three-eighths to onehalf of an equivalent of a water-soluble inorganic base, such as sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxide, or a correspondingly equivalent amount of an inorganic salt derived from a strong base and a weak acid, such as sodium carbonate or phosphate, so that aqueous dispersions of the products have a pH of 7 to 9. In examples, (1) a 20 per cent. aqueous solution of 17 to 20 grams of caustic soda is added slowly with stirring to 284 grams of molten stearic acid and the solution, after standing, is ready for use on dilution with water; (2) an aqueous solution of 0.5 gram equivalent of ammonia or caustic soda is stirred into 1 gram equivalent of commercial oleic acid and the mass, on standing overnight, is ready for use on dilution with water; (3) a 20 per cent. solution of 22 to 26 grams of caustic potash is stirred into 282 grams of commercial mixed soap-making fatty acids and the mass, on standing overnight, is ready for use on . dilution with water, Specifications 289.582, [CLass 91], 333,177, [Class 15 (ii)], 430,341, [Group IV], and 475,478 are referred to.
