Abstract

553,479. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 2, 1942, No. 12366. Convention date, Sept 4, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] In order to prevent the arc being blown too quickly through an arc chute, for example in a switch such as disclosed in Specification 541,612, the exhaust end of the chute has means for restricting the venting area in response to a predetermined increase of gas-pressure. in the chute. A pair of slotted plates 14, 15 are normally pressed apart by springs 16, the plate 14 having transverse slots 14<SP>1</SP> and plates 15 having vertical slots 15<SP>1</SP>. When a certain gas-pressure is set up in the chute, the plate 14 is pressed back towards 15 and the venting area thus diminished, whereby the arc is retarded in its movement through the chute. The part 15" of plate 15 is left solid in order to retard the centre of the arc. In modifications, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), the plates have semi-registering holes, the degree of registry being, if desired, greater at the ends than at the middle so as to retard the arc-centre.
