[Class 75 (iii)] A cigarette lighter having a flat element. heated by catalytic action, or electrically, is provided with a hollow member which can be closed by the insertion of the cigarette without touching the element. and is adapted for lighting a pipe by the provision of a larger hollow member which surrounds the first and against which the pipe bowl may be abutted. As shown, the lighter comprises a compartment 19 charged with absorbent material and surrounded by a band 14 having a hinged part 17 carrying seals for the main orifice of the lighter and an aperture 37 in the compartment 19 respectively. The catalyst 23 is carried by a funnel-shaped holder 21 having a tubular extension 25 surrounded by a compression spring and bearing against a sealing member 31 carried by the wall of the compartment 19. The tubular extension is fitted with a washer 28. The holder 21 is fitted with a second funnel-shaped member 40 into which a cigarette 42 is placed for lighting. A short, rubber cylinder 9, bedded in an annular recess, forms the abutment for the pipe. In either case the user draws vapour laden air from the compartment through a hole 36 past the catalyst the hot gases thus generated igniting the tobacco. The gases may be heated by a disc heated electrically, and the lighter may be combined with a pouch &c.
