552,581. Pantothenic acid. HOFFMANLA ROCHE & CO., AKT.-GES., F. May 2, 1941, No. 5745. Convention date, April 19, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Pantothenic acid is prepared by reacting an alkaline solution of #-alanine with α-hydroxy- ##-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone. In examples the reaction is carried out in the presence of (1) sodium methoxide in aqueous solution, (2) an aqueous solution of caustic soda, (3) a methyl alcohol solution of sodium methoxide, and (4) an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. In each case the pantothenic acid is isolated as the calcium salt. Specifications 535,988 and 551,883 are referred to.
