Abstract
552,453. Ink-ribbon mechanism. GESER, J. R. Oct. 6, 1941, No. 12901. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1940. [Class 100 (iv)] In a duplicating-arrangement for typewriters comprising one or more ribbons fed along the printing line by spools which are driven by means of friction-rollers engaging the platen, the spools are prevented from being turned (and thereby slackening the ribbon) when the platen is turned backwards by providing automatically disengageable claw-clutches in the driving-trains. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, each spool 5 is driven by a train consisting of pinions 4, 7, 12 and a toothed friction-roller 15 engaging the platen, the pinion 12 being provided with a clutch-member 12a which is held by a spring 33 in engagement with a clutch member 7a on the pinion 7. The clutch opens when the platen is turned backwards. The pinions 7, 12 and clutch are movable axially on the shaft 31 by means of an arm 30 to effect engagement or disengagement of the pinions 7, 4. The arm 30 engages an arm 18 having pin-and-slot engagement with a lever 16 which is pivoted on a pin 17 and is connected by a band 13 to a slotted ribbon-guide. When the ribbon has wound off either spool, a projection engages the associated ribbon-guide, the arm 18 is lifted, a tooth 20 thereon is released from a worm 21, a spring 22 rocks the arm, the pinion 7 engages the pinion 4, the pinion 7 of the full spool is released by the aid of a rod 32, and the feed is reversed.
