Abstract
552,284. Building frameworks ; structural metal joints. BUELOW, H.W. March 1, 1941, No. 2794. [Class 20 (ii)] Constructional metal bars preferably of the kind formed of opposed angle or channel members back to back and grooved longitudinally to provide distorted apertures for nails, are joined together by clip members adapted to embrace one of the bars and having a part to which the other bar is secured, the embraced portion of the first bar being capable of expansion by means of a rail or the like to cause the embracing: part to grip it. In one form the clip member -222 is of angle form, one limb having two ears 226 adapted to be bent around the flanges of one section bar 105, while the other'limb has a single ear at its. end adapted to be' bent around the flange of the section bar 101 disposed at right angles to the first. The limbs are provided with apertures 227 through which nails can be driven to expand the section' bars against the respective ear's and further apertures .229 may be provided in each limb to receive screws as supplementary fixing means. For securing inclined rafters to the heads of studs, Fig. 3, the clips 320 are of channel form each with an inclined portion 326 at its upper end having ears 328 to bend around the flanges of the rafter 112, the ends of the wings of the channel being bent around the composite stud 108. Nails driven through apertures 330 in the wings and inclined portion expand the section bars against the ears. The lower ends of the studs fit into the channels of further clips 200 secured to inverted channel bars which run along the upper ends of the main frame uprights of the building. The clips 374, Figs. 5 and 6, for securing transverse ties to the rafters are of channel section with a central projecting web 376 adapted to project into the space between the flanges of the composite bar 112, the wings of the clip being provided with ears 382 which are bent around the upper and lower flanges of this bar. The web of the clip is provided with a bolt 384 for securing the web of the tie 370 and apertures 388 are provided to receive the nails for expansion. The flanges at.the ends of the -tie are upturned to lie in the plane of the web of the tie so that a flat end is provided on the tie to abut against the face of the web of the clip. In another form the clip comprises a channel shaped plate with end angles forming recesses to receive the edges of the flanges of a section bar, the angle portions fitting over and embracing another section bar disposed at tight angles at the end of the first bar. The clip shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be used in staircase construction to receive an inclined bar the end of which is secured to a transverse joist by a connection plate according to Specification 552,283.
