Abstract

551,713. Surgical dressings. STEEL, H. G. May 22, 1940, No. 9070. [Class 81 (ii)] A surgical dressing comprises an absorbent substance such as gauze, wool, lint or textile fabric impregnated or coated with a medicinal substance and also with a wax, varnish or equivalent substance having the property of becoming emollient at body temperature. The emollient substance perferably consists of a mixture of hard and soft paraffin wax. A hygroscopic substance such as glycerine or a normally crystalline substance from which the water of crystallisation has been driven off, such as magnesium sulphate, may be added. The medicament such as iodine, acriflavine, or mercurial substances may be first compounded with the wax, &c. and the absorbent material dipped therein, or the material may be first coated with the curative compound and then dipped in or sprayed with the emollient substance. Specifications 117,750 and 139,077, [both in Class 81 (ii)], are referred to.
