Abstract
550,354. Variable-pitch airscrews. JACKSON, O. C., and JACKSON, M. May 23, 1941. Nos. 6599 and 12216. [Class 114] In variable-pitch co-axial, counter rorotating airscrews, the pitch of the front screw A is varied by worm, &c. gearing carried thereby and operated by a central gear 5 which is between the screws and is integral with a gear 2 in train with pinions 1 carried by the rear screw B. The pinions 1 are mounted on shafts with pinions 3 in mesh with a normally stationary control gear 4 integral with a gear 7 engaged by a control pinion 22. The gear ratio of the train 1, 2, 3, 4 is 1 : 2 the pitch of the rear screw B is varied by worms b on the shafts of which are pinions 8 in mesh with a central gear 9 integral with a planet carrier 10 having planet pinions 11 in mesh with a central idler 13 and with a normally stationary ring gear 12 engaged by a second control pinion 17. A second set of planet pinions 14 carried by a spider 15 secured to the rear airscrew is in mesh with the idler 13, and with a fixed ring gear 16. By operating the pinions 22, 17, through motors, either separately or conjointly, the pitches of the propellers may be similarly varied.
