Abstract

550,080. Lathe centres. SHOTTON, J. E. July 28, 1941, No. 9563. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe centre is made in two main parts 1, 5, only the part 1 being of hard steel. The parts are hollow and the stem 3 telescopes into a counterbore of part 5. Pins 10 on the stem pass through cam slots 10 to a ring 11. The interior is filled with grease by a piston 12 slidable on a rod 13 under spring pressure 15, and rotation of the ring 11 to force the centre back against spring pressure 6 permits the grease to be forced down the bore 4. The pins 9 have play in the slots 10 so that the spring 6 takes the end pressure and permits movement should the work heat up and expand. When not in use the tip of the centre may be protected by a cap.
