549,962. Fatty acid esters. DREW, E. F. March 14, 1941, No. 3464. [Class 2 (iii)] An emulsion of oil and soap obtained in the purification by alkali treatment of a natural vegetable oil of the lauric-myristic type (coconut, palm kernel and babassu oil) or the oil itself is hydrolyzed, the resulting free fatty acids are removed and distilled to separate a lower boiling and higher boiling fraction and the lower boiling fraction which contains the acids having ten carbon atoms or less is esterified with a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol, giving an edible oil of low congealing point. The lower boiling fraction may be further fractionated before esterification to obtain a fraction consisting essentially of caprylic, capric, and lauric acids and a minor amount of caproic and myristic acids.
