Abstract

549,397. Feeding cut tobacco. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. July 22, 1941. No. 9239. [Class 130] [Also in Group XVII] In apparatus for feeding cut tobacco, for example to cigarette-making or tobacco-packing machines, in which tobacco is removed from a hopper 2 by a carded combing member such as a roller 5 or a belt, the tobacco is fed to the combing member 5 by a carded feeder disposed above the base of the hopper and arranged to allow short fibres to fall on to a shaking conveyer 4 adapted to feed the shorts towards the combing member. As shown, the feeder comprises carded rollers 19 mounted for rotation in the same direction and so disposed that their carding intermeshes, allowing only shorts to fall between them. Alternatively, the feeder may comprise a carded belt linked, perforated or reticulated to allow shoits to fall through it. The conveyer 4 is a plate supported by springs 6 or levers and actuated by an eccentric 11 and connecting-rod 9. A shield 13 is provided beneath the roller 5 and the tobacco on the roller is tamped by a device 14 as described in Specification 385,210, or the feeding apparatus may be constructed as described in Specification 520,178. Tobacco is fed to the hopper by an oscillating flap 3 as described in Specification 370,640. Specifications 367,431 and 549,341 also are referred to.
