Abstract

278,489. Molins, W. E. Aug. 27, 1926. Cigarette - making machines. - In a machine of the continuous-rod type, the tobacco is fed to the carded feed rollers of the tobacco hopper by a conveyer operable automatically to separate completely the long and short shreds of tobacco from one other. The long shreds are fed by the conveyer to the main hopper and the short shreds are conveyed to an auxiliary hopper and evenly distributed over the mass of long shreds in the main hopper. The invention is shown as applied to the feeding apparatus described in Specification 249,575. Tobacco is fed from a receptacle 1 to the feeding roller 2 of the main hopper by a series of reciprocating conveyer elements 3 provided with teeth 4, each alternate element 3 reciprocating out of phase with its neighbour. One set of elements 3 is carried upon spindles 5, 6 and the other set upon spindles 7, 8. The spindles 5, 6 are connected through cranks 9, 10 to sprocket wheels 11, 12 and the spindles 7, 8 through cranks 13, 14 to sprocket wheels 15, 16, the sprocket 15 being driven from the main shaft and driving the sprockets 11, 12, 16 through chains 19. The conveyer elements 3 loosen the tobacco, and the short shreds of tobacco fall between the conveyer elements into a trough 22 communicating with an upward channel 24 and an auxiliary hopper 26 over the main hopper; worms in the trough 22 and channel 24 convey the shreds to the auxiliary hopper, which is also provided with a rotating worm 27, Fig. 7, and with an adjustable slot 28 from which the short shreds fall on the mass of long shreds in the space above the feed roller 2 and combing roller 29. In a modification, one set of elements 3 is stationary and the remaining set reciprocates.
