Abstract

548,337. Photo-sensitive electrodes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 30, 1941, No. 6969. Convention date, June 1, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a photo-sensitive electrode including a rigid transparent insulating sheet having deposited on one side a photo-sensitive mosaic and on the other a transparent metallic layer, a transparent protective insulating layer is either deposited on, or mounted closely adjacent to, the metallic layer. In the form shown, the photo-sensitive electrode comprises a sheet of mica 2 about 0.002 inches thick to which are applied two metallic ribbons 6, 6a, for example by painting on a colloidal solution of platinum chloride and subsequently heating to 400‹ C. to reduce the platinum. A transparent film 4 of chromium, platinum, tungsten, or other metal is then evaporated on to the mica and subsequently covered with a film of evaporated quartz, barium borate, cryolite or other material to form the transparent protective layer 5a Alternatively, the protective layer may be formed of a glass sheet 5 with the corners 7, 7a cut away to allow connections to be made to the metal ribbons 6, 6a, and held by a frame or clamps. The photosensitive mosaic 3 is formed on the other surface of the mica sheet, preferably after the electrode is mounted in the tube, and may consist of caesiated silver globules or a film of photo-sensitive material so thin that the molecules or small groups of molecules are physically separate from one another. The electrode is shown mounted in a television transmission tube comprising an electron gun consisting of a cathode 13, control electrode 14, and accelerating electrodes 15, 16 together with a shielding electrode 18 and a collector electrode 19 for electrons which do not reach the mosaic surface 3. The beam is focused by a coil 11 and deflected by deflecting plates 17 and a coil 12. The protective layer may be formed by the end wall of the tube. Specifications 462,550 and 506,143 are referred to.
