Abstract

469,418. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BRETT, G. F. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 2353. [Class 39 (i)] Small, gas-focused, cathode-ray tubes operating at low voltages and applicable as indicating-instruments in radio direction-finders &c. comprise a cathode 3 with small, circular, emissive area 3a and three transverse, circularly apertured electrodes 5 .. 7 ; the electrode 5 is in or as close as possible to the plane of the area 3a and surrounds this area, the electrode 6 has an aperture of about À75 rnm. diameter and is 1-1À75 mm. in front of the area 3a, and the electrode 7 is close to the electrode 6 and has a much larger aperture than those in the other electrodes. The electrode 5 is connected to the cathode 3 or to one leg of the cathode heater, the electrode 6 is at a low positive potential varied for focusing control and the electrode 7 is connected inside or outside the tube to the metal plate of the fluorescent screen 8 and is at the full anode potential. The electron beam may be deflected magnetically, or electrostatically by plates 10, 11 which may be surrounded by a cylindrical metal sheath. The leads to the plates 10, 11 may be surrounded by glass sleeves. The electrode 7, separated by mica 12 from the electrode 6, may have a cylindrical extension 7b ending in an apertured disc 7c. In modifications, the fluorescent material is deposited on a semi-transparent metal layer on the end wall of the tube or a metallized fluorescent screen on a mica backing is used. Voltages and dimensions are specified.
