Abstract

548,278. Loud-speakers. PHILCO RADIO & TELEVISION CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1941, No. 1177. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1940. [Class 40 (iv)] In order to .improve the frequency response characteristic of loud-speakers by diminishing the effect of cabinet resonance, an auxiliary diaphragm or other means having both compliance and mass is provided which in the resonance range serves as a load to damp the resonance effects and in the range of lower frequencies increases the effective mass of the main diaphragm so as to improve the reproduction of low frequencies. The auxiliary means may comprise (1) an annular diaphragm 6, Fig. 2, carrying a small annular mass 7 of rubber, the ring 7 being closed by a dust cover 8.; (2) a centering spider 9, Fig. 5, loaded with a small mass 10 which may be damped by a light strip 11 secured at its ends to the cone or spider, or by impregnating the spider with a resinous damping material; or (3) a ring 12, Fig. 6,.of sponge rubber attached to the cone. The mass and compliance of the auxiliary means is such that its natural resonance is the same as the cabinet resonance and thus damps the latter.
