Abstract
663,734. Loud-speakers. MURPHY RADIO, Ltd., and BALEAN, J.H. June 17, 1949 [Jan. 13, 1948], No. 1026/48. Class 40 (iv). In a loudspeaker having a diaphragm capable of reproducing frequencies down to 20 cycles per second, the response at low frequencies is maintained when the back of the diaphragm is totally enclosed in a box, by a stiff plate which partly acoustically closes the opening filled by the diaphragm in the box. The stiff plates 7 and 8, Fig. 1, conform approxi - mately to the shape of the diaphragm 1 and are mounted close to the diaphragm. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the stiff plate is mounted on the top plate of the pot magnet and is perforated. This modified arrangement provides a higher degree of damping since the acoustic resistance is dependent on the ratio of the periphery of the holes to their area.
