Abstract
547,349. Machinery guards. RUBERY OWEN & CO., Ltd., and SHORT, W. C. C. June 18, 1941, No. 7685. [Class 80 (iv)] A tool press has a guard movable into guarding position before the press can operate and returned just before the tools act on the work. In the form described, the guard 18, Figs 2: and 3, is carried by rods 19, and hinged at the lower ends of its sides to pivoted arms 23. Each rod 19 has a shaped head 41, adapted to be engaged by a bellcrank 42 on a shaft 35 and thereby held raised. Depression of a pedal 27 acts through a Bowden connection 28 a one-way clutch and arms 33, 34 to rock the shaft 35 so as to release the guard which falls until member 44 engages a stop 46, and during its fall withdraws a bolt 51 linked to a bracket 48 on a rod 19, so that when the guard is in its operative position, the end of the bolt is out of engagement with a movable brake member 16. Depression of a pedal 26 then causes endwise movement of a bar 54, Fig 4, which acts through a member 56 to engage the press clutch and release the brake 16. The main shaft 58 carries an adjustable abutment 59, which engages the member 44 at a selected moment during the descent of the tool 12, and causes the guard to be raised to its upper position, where it is again held by the bellcranks 42, a ramp movable with the tool having caused the separation of the halves of the one-way clutch and allowed the shaft 35 to return to its initial position. When the tool 12 has again reached its upper position, a hammer arm 65 on a shaft 66 raises'the free end of the bar 54 to cause the press clutch to be released and the brake 16 engaged. In order to allow the press to be turned by hand for " setting-up," the arm 65 is so mounted that it may be moved into an inoperative position.
