Abstract
546,760. Dynamo-electric machines cooling ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., TEAL, J., ROBERTS, L., and BALL, R. D. March 22, 1941, Nos. 3902/41 and 1304/42. [Class 35] Totally-enclosed dynamo-electric machines with conductors insulated by woven glass so that they may run at very high temperatures are provided with cooling passages C, F in stator and rotor through which pass streams of air the path including the exterior of the bearing housings 1c, 9c at both ends and a substantial length of shaft 8 between the rotor and the housing which is left bare for the purpose, and ducts in the rotor. The end plates of the machine, incorporating the bearing housings, are formed with a groove 1d in which a projection 6a on the rotor clamping ring forms a good running joint thus leaving air pockets B, D around the bare parts of the shaft. The arrows indicate the paths of the two air streams produced by the fan 15 with blades on each of its faces and rotating in an air bell formed by the additional casing 16. In a modification, a large fan with a single set of blades at one closed end of the casing is used and serves to draw air towards it in the same directions through both ducts from the other end. Or the closed end may have air inlets so that additional cooling air is drawn in to mingle with the air drawn through the ducts before expulsion through the " closed end.
