[Class 17 (i)] The machine described in the parent Specification and modified as described in Specifications 530,981 and 539,234 is improved by the provision of additional upper spreading fingers which act on the upper just toe-ward of the most toe-ward of the pulling-over tacks, and means whereby the operator may readily observe for what sizes of shoes the shear block'is adjusted. On each side of the work position a lever 55 carries at its lower end a pivoted arm having at its inner end a block 81 with a serrated lower edge. Each block has an upstanding pin engaging between a curved guide-plate 89 and the upper margin pressing fingers 87 described in the prior Specifications. These pins guide the blocks as they move outwardly to spread the upper over the support described in the prior Specifications. The levers 55 are pivoted at 59 and 61 to move so that the blocks first fall on to the bottom of the shoe and then move outwardly towards the opposite sides thereof. The levers are urged downwardly by springs 77 and toward each other by a spring 73, against opposite movements produced by a pair of cams 27, 33 driven by skew gearing at the ends of a shaft 13. The two cams have a lost motion coupling to allow the initial fall on to the shoe. To adjust the work support for size of shoe the two halves of the shear block are pivoted together and adjusted by a right-and-left hand screw 105, as in the prior construction. An adjusting knob 127 is geared to this screw and carries marks indicating to which of, say, four positions the knob has been turned.
