Abstract
419,363. Boot-making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and KEALL, F. B., Belgrave Road, Leicester. May 10, 1933, Nos. 13554 and 30895. [Class 17 (i).] Ornamenting.-In a machine for indenting shoe sole margins by a toothed wheel co-operating with a sole support, the wheel is mechanically driven and also reciprocated transversely of its axis to impart a beating action to the sole margin, and the support is maintained in position to resist such action by a device possessing considerable inertia and acting under gravitation. The work support 10 is freely rotatable and mounted adjustably for tilt on an arcuate member 12 held in an arm 14 pivoted at 16. The member 12 rests on a plunger 22 vertically adjustable in a guided sleeve 28 linked to an arm 38 pivoted on a boss 40, itself pivoted eccentrically at 43 to the machine column and having an arm 44 on which is slidably adjustable a weight 46, the arm normally resting on a stop 50. A treadle rod 54 is pivoted to the arm 38. Depression of the treadle straightens the toggle constituted by the link 34 and its connection with the arm 38 and raises the arm 44 so that the support presses the sole against the indenting wheel with a substantially constant pressure while moving in response to variations in sole thickness. The indenting wheel is driven through a clutch 68 from a spur wheel 62 and also reciprocated towards and from the work by an eccentric portion 19 of a driven shaft 80. A spherical bearing surface 74 connects the indenting wheel with the part 19, and the bearings for the shaft 60 are tapered and cut away at top and bottom, respectively, to allow the transverse reciprocation. In a modification, the shank of the indenting wheel is carried by a bearing reciprocated in a vertical slide, and the shank is connected to its driving shaft by a coupling comprising splines and co-operating grooves arranged at right - angles in disc members. A gas pipe 67 is provided for heating the tool. Guide fingers 21 arranged on the two sides of the wheel prevent damage to the shoe upper. The shaft 80 is driven at some 2000 revolutions per minute and the wheel at about 40. The vertical travel is about 02 inch with a wheel having sixteen teeth to the inch, less teeth necessitating a greater travel. According to the first Provisional Specification, the sole support may be pivoted near the central pivot of a lever having a 30 lb. weight at one end and one of 18 lbs. at the other.
