Abstract

546,171. Fabrics &c. containing rubber or rubber-like substances. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1940, No. 16281. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1939. [Class 140] A material containing rubber-like substances and suitable for making tyres, belts and other laminated or composite articles is made by impregnating fabric filaments, threads, cords &c. with a dispersion containing a mixture of rubberlike substance and protein, drying and heating above 100‹C. for a period sufficient to produce maximum adhesion to a layer of rubber composition which, after such heating, is applied thereto and vulcanized. In one example the impregnating liquid contains 5 per cent. soya bean protein and 12 ¢ per cent. rubber, 10 per cent. of the weight of protein being used to solubilize it.' Rayon cords are dipped in this and heated at 135‹C. for one hour. This material is then calendered to a backing consisting of a usual tyre body composition on woven fabric and vulcanized. In another example the above impregnating composition contains also 5 per cent. casein solubilized by 15 per cent. sodium cresylate, the percentage being that of the weight of casein. In a third example 4 per cent. casein solubilized by 21 per cent. sodium cresylate and 15 per cent. rubber is used. The heat treatment may be in a vacuum or in an oxygen-containing. atmosphere. The rubber dispersion may be of natural or artificial and of unvulcanized or reclaimed rubber ; the dispersion may also be of neoprene or of polymers based on butadiene or of other rubber-like substances. The times and temperatures of the heat treatment may be varied. The protein may be stabilized by a fixed alkali such as lithium, sodium or potassium, or by hydroxides, carbonates, phosphates, borates, silicates, tannates, fluorides, oxalates, tartrates, phenolates, cresylates &c. Sodium or potassium phenolates or cresylates are particularly desirable. Ammonia or amines may be used. For proteins, zein, from corn, and cotton-seed protein may be used. For the fabric, cotton or regenerated cellulose may be used.
