Abstract

545,415. Lubricants. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Oct. 9, 1940, No. 15069. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1939. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Fatty acids having 6 to 22 carbon atoms are esterified with methallyl alcohol. The resulting esters may be sulphonated. In examples, methallyl alcohol is esterified with lauric, capric palmitic, stearic and caprylic acids, using ptoluene sulphonic acid or sulphuric acid as esterification catalyst. Sulphonation is effected with sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid with acetic anhydride or ethylenedichloride as solvent. Ethallyl alcohol, 2-methylcrotyl alcohol, 3- methyl-3-butene-1-ol and 4-methyl-4-pentene- 1-ol are specified alcoholic components. Naphthenic and resin acids may be used. They may be used for lubricating textiles. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use, instead of methallyl alcohol, of any alcohol having the formula R 1 R, C=CR, (CH 2 ) # OH wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen or alkyl having not more than 4 carbon atoms, R 3 is alkyl having not more than 6 carbon atoms and n is 1; 2 or 3. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
