Abstract

543,671. Bipolar electrolysers for producing hydrogen and oxygen. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. April 2, 1940, No. 5922. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1939. [Class 41] A bipolar electrolyser for producing hydrogen and oxygen consisting of a block of cells C has washing chambers 13 for each of the gases at the sides of the block and an equalizing chamber 9 open to the atmosphere in front of it. Each cell has separate outlet pipes 1 for the gases leading through insulating connections 2 to tubes passing into the liquid in the gas washers. The tubes have lateral holes preferably directed obliquely upwards and carry a partition 19 which allows electrolyte to pass downward without contact with the cooling coils 13. The gases pass away through coolers 4 and the electrolyte passes by connections 15 to the equalizing tank 9 from which it is returned to the electrolyser by a pump 10.
