Abstract

543,159. Electric furnace. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 21, 1940, No. 15529. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1939. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for fusing silica in vacuo comprises a container 3 which can be hermetically sealed, carbonaceous resistance heaters 10 arranged therein and surrounded by a porous mass 12 of zirconia or beryllia, a crucible 6, also a compound of zirconia or beryllia, placed in the fusion space within the porous mass, and means for evacuating gas from the furnace. The packing 12 is surrounded and supported by a cylinder 13 of refractory material, the space between the cylinder and the container being filled with a second packing 14 of refractory material to serve as heat insulation. The charge of silica 9, after being. fused, may be allowed to cool and be removed as an ingot, or the fused mass may be formed into tubes and rods. This may be effected by drawing the fusion upwards through the top of the crucible or by extruding it downwards by air pressure, through an opening in the bottom of the crucible. In either case, a core tube is used to admit air to the bore of the tubing when tube is being drawn. Specifications 375,500 and 450,927, [both in Group XXIII], are referred to.
