Abstract
542,812. Guanidine derivatives; wetting agents. GEIGY AKT.-GES., J. R. July 23, 1940, No. 12058; Convention date, May 8. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Quaternary ammonium compounds useful as wetting agents or softening agents for textiles are prepared by treating an alkyl- or aralkylcyanoguanidine containing an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic acyl residue having 9-19 carbon atoms with an alkylating or aralkylating agent to the point of solubility in water. The starting materials may be prepared by acylating dicyandiamide with the appropriate carboxylic acid or derivative thereof and alkylating or aralkylating the product. According to the examples, (1) a methylated stearylcyanoguanidine, obtained by re-acting stearylcyanoguanidine in chlorobenzene with dimethyl sulphate in the presence of sodium carbonate, is heated with dimethyl sulphate or bromacetic acid ethyl ester until water-soluble ; (2) a methylated laurylcyanoguanidine, prepared as in (1) from laurylcyanoguanidine, is heated for some hours with benzyl chloride ; (3) an ethyllaurylcyanoguanidine, obtained by treating laurylcyanoguanidine with diethyl sulphate in presence of chlorobenzene and sodium carbonate, is heated with diethyl sulphate to give a water-soluble product.
