Abstract

542,466. Gyroscopic apparatus. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and MEREDITH, F. W. May 8, 1940, No. 8318. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A self-aligning bearing, particularly for gyroscope gimbals; has a spherical outer race held by spring pressure against a support. The inner race is carried by the journal 10 which is provided with resilient buffers 23, 24. The outer race 12 is extended at 16 to engage a sleeve 15 formed on a flange 18 on the mount 19. An end member 20 is threaded into part 19 and has a central spigot 21 receiving a spring 22. A resilient ring 26 may be provided between extension 16 and flange 18. When the rotor is spun by air jets, the fluid may be conducted through the bearing in passages 27, 30 and a ball-ended pipe 32 mounted at one end in a journal recess 28 and at the other end in a recess 29 in the spigot 21, formed by a separate inset in member 20.
