Abstract

541,179. Shock absorbers. JOHNSON, E. W., and VANDERVELL PRODUCTS, Ltd. March 13, 1940, No. 4756. [Class 108 (iii)] In a shock absorber comprising a piston movable in a cylinder in a casing to force fluid through a restricted passage provided between an aperture in the piston and a metering rise rod extending therethrough and along which the piston reciprocates, detachable ends caps are secured to the metering rod to relieve the casing from strain. Various constructions are described which include single acting and double acting devices and provision for adjustment of the action. In Fig. 1, pistons 30, 31 operate in cylinders 28, 29 mounted on a container 16 housing fluid so as to make up deficiencies in the cylinders through valves 46 and varies excess pressure fluid through valves 52. The restriction is provided between a metering rod 42 mounted in detachable caps 40, 41 in the ends of the cylinders and a sleeve 32 which extends through the pistons and is sealed thereto by the flared end 33 and a packing 34 at the other end, which packing is pressed home by a spring 36 serving also to press the two pistons towards one another, relative rotation of the pistons being provided by interlocking shoulders at their meeting ends. The energy to the absorber is applied as described in Specification 541,201, through a crank arm to rock a shaft 21 mounted in the container and having fixed thereto a built-up perforated arm provided on each branch 57 with a boss 59 to receive a split bearing 62, 63, the parts of each of which are held towards one another by a spring 65 and have flat parts to bear against facing plates 61 secured to the pistons. Endwise movement of the rock shaft 21 is prevented by a crossbar 66 mounted between the perforated arms 57 and engaging pins 67 on the container, the cover 17. of which is secured by a screw 68 to the crossbar. Apertured lugs 18 on the container serve for mounting the device. In operation, movement of the rock arm in either direction forces fluid through the restricted aperture around the metering rod from one cylinder into the other. In another modification the metering rod is hollow and compressed fluid in one cylinder can pass through, the rod and not through a spring-controlled valve into the other cylinder, thereby rendering the action of the device different for the two directions *,according to the spring-loading of the valve: this result may also be attained by providing a movable valve or plug of various diameters opposite the aperture from the hollow metering rod and actuating this valve from any desired position. In another modification the metering rod may have parts of different diameter and of varying section.
