[Class 25] [Also in Group XXVII] A spark arrester suitable for mounting in the exhaust conduit or chimney of large Diesel engines comprises a cylindrical casing 5 having frustoconical bottom and top walls 6, 7 formed with co-axial inlet and outlet openings 8, 9 of approximately the same diameter and containing a biconical deflector 10 connected to the bottom wall by stationary spin-inducing vanes 11 and to the top wall by bent baffle vanes 12 surrounding a perforated cylinder 20 containing radial baffles 17, 18. The sparks and other particles whirling in the casing 5 are discharged through one or more skimming openings 15 into cyclone separators 13 connected to a bunker and chimney. The whirling gases are suddenly deflected on entering between the baffles 12 thereby causing the heavier particles to rebound outwardly. The cylinder 20 and baffles 17, 18 act as a silencer, the baffles preferably consisting of spaced perforated metal sheets enclosing glass or steel wool or other sound-deadening material. The diameters of the casing and deflector are less than twice and one and a half times, respectively, the diameter of the openings 8, 9. In another construction three coaxial series of baffle vanes 12 surrounding three coaxial cylinders increasing in diameter upwardly are provided, the vanes being arranged more closely in the upper series so as to equalize the quantities of gas passing through each series.
