Abstract

539,507. Yeast. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. Dec. 7, 1939, Nos. 31701 and 31702. Convention dates, Dec. 20, 1938 and Oct. 5, 1939. [Class 14 (ii)] [Also in Group I] A fertiliser for plants and nutrient medium for fungi, yeast and algae comprises a compound of the polyphenylethane or polyphenylethylene series or of the corresponding series in which one or more of the phenyl groups is wholly or in part hydrogenated, mixed with a nutrient solution or other fertiliser. Examples of compounds of the above series include triphenylethylene 4, 4<SP>1</SP>-dioxystilbene (1); α, α<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl-I ; α-methyl-α<SP>1</SP>-ethyl-1; α, α<SP>1</SP>-diethinyl-I; α, α<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl-I; 3, 4-(4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>-dioxydiphenyl)-2, 4 hexeadiene ; 2, 3-(4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>-dioxydiphenyl)-1, 3-butadiene ; α-ethinyl-4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>-dioxydiphenylthane and ethylidene-4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>, 4<SP>111</SP>-trioxytriphenylethane. These compounds may be used as acetates, succinates, phosphates, halides or saccharides, and if they contain free acid groups are preferably used as calcium, potassium or ammonium salts. Keto-groups may also be present in the compounds used.
