Abstract

538,980. Conveyers. AMERICAN CAN CO. March 6, 1940, No. 15705. Convention date, March 17, 1939. Divided out of 638,968, [Group III] [Class 78 (i)] A conveyer C for carrying containers through a reservoir D of molten paraffin wax in a coating machine includes a number of double-conical holders 101, each presenting a V-shaped seat extending transversely of the conveyer throughout an arc for carryng a container with its axis at right angles to the conveyer, whereby the container may be moved about the arc for draining off excess paraffin wax. The conveyer is described as applied to a machine such as that described in Specification 538,968, for coating a milk container a of the character described in Specification 470,098, Group XVII], and having a hinged closure b; Fig. 5. The containers are stacked between bars 24, Fig. 1, with the closures b in open position and are fed to the conveyer C by double-disc feed turrets 31, 51. Each container is taken from a shelf 27 by a carrier 35 on the turret 31 and is guided by a rail 47, the closure being held open by an extension 48 of the rail. The container is turned, by means of a fixed cam groove 43 engaged by an arm 41, into position for engagement with pockets 52 in the turret 51. The conveyer C consists of the double-conical members 101 connected by pairs of links 102 carrying rollers 105 running on tracks 111, and carries the containers between guide rails 131, 133 and through the steamjacketed coating reservoir D, the rail 133 holding open the closure b of the container. On leaving the reservoir D, the container is guided and turned through 180 degrees by a guide plate 135,Fig. 2, supported on arms 136 on the sprocket shaft bearings 116 and provided with container end and corner guiding surfaces 137 and a closure guiding surface 138, so that the wax is spread inside and outside the container. On the upper run of the conveyer, guide rails 141 turn the containers in a transverse plane as in Fig. 5 to drain off the wax, and then turn back through a horizontal position to an upright position ready for discharge by a transfer device such as that described in Specification 538,968, rails 142 holding the closure b open.
