Abstract
538,666. Pipe joints. CUTHILL, J., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 8, 1940, No. 4395. [Class 99 (i)] In an easily releasable screw joint for well-drilling strings the spigot 1 carries a sleeve 17 adapted for limited rotational movement on the spigot and having a bevelled end 19 engaging a seat 20 in the end of the socket 13. The abutting shoulders 9 of sleeve and spigot are inclined in the opposite direction to the screw threads. A pin 21 in the sleeve engages a helical groove 11 in the spigot and a spring 12 in the groove normally holds the step shoulders 10 in contact. In tightening the joint the shoulders 10 are separated on relative rotation of spigot and sleeve. On unscrewing, the action of the spring causes quick release of wedging action.
