Abstract
536,491. Hydrocarbons. FIFE, J. G. (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). Sept. 28, 1939, No. 26797. [Class 2 (iii)] In a process for the production of aromatic hydrocarbons from unsaturated hydrocarbons, the latter are first freed from peroxides, and then subjected to catalytic cyclization. As initial materials, hexene-1, heptene-1 and -2, and 2-methyloctene are specified ; also mixtures consisting of or containing olefines, obtainable by vapour phase cracking of hydrocarbon materials containing solid paraffin wax. The initial material may be freed from peroxides by treatment with a reducing agent, e.g. acidified ferrous sulphate or sodium bisulphite, or by distillation or extraction. Oxides of metals of the sixth group of the periodic system, e.g. chromium oxide, may be used as catalysts alone or in admixture with oxides of the third or fourth group. The process may also be carried out in the presence of activators, e.g. potassium hydroxide. The presence of hydrogen prolongs the life of the catalyst. In examples, benzene and xylene are obtained from hexene-1 and octene-2 using a chromium oxide catalyst, the starting material being freed from peroxide by treatment with ferrous sylphate acidified with sulphuric acid. The results obtained are contrasted with those obtained without the preliminary purification from peroxides.
